Chicago Public League Tournament Wrap-Up

The Red West is the best. The toughest conference probably in the nation is the Red West, which once again proved it is worthy of that ranking by having four teams advance to the semifinals of the Public League Holiday Tournament at Chicago State. Crane won the tournament for the second year in a row with a 53 –– 47 victory over Westinghouse, which advanced to the championship by beating Young 60 –– 58 earlier in the day. Florentino Valencia (MVP) led Crane with 14 points and 9 rebounds. Crane is a junior laden team who is off to an 11 –– 1 start and their only loss has been to Oak Hill Academy who is No.1 in the nation. Westinghouse (10 –– 4) got 15 points from Darius Glover, and 11 points from Jamal Brown. The Cougars got 11 points from Carl Marshall and 12 rebounds from Lorenzo Thompson. Both of these teams open conference play against each other Tuesday.
Crane @ Westinghouse - 1/8/01

For the second time in 3 days Westinghouse and Crane were set to battle. This nothing was at stake but bragging rights until January 31 when the teams meet again. Crane beat Westinghouse Saturday at Chicago State 53 – 47 for the CPS Holiday Tournament championship. Darius Glover had 27 points and 14 rebound but fouled out with 2:20 left in overtime and Westinghouse up 68 – 66. Chris Head then turned to the No. 1 sophomore in the state in Jamarcus Ellis who scored 5 points, and Clyde Crosby hit a clutch tree pointer to help Westinghouse escape with a 74 – 71 victory. The game came to an end when a fan in the stands had a gun. After the fan was rushed out of the gym by police. Fans began to throw pop bottles onto the floor and chaos erupted. The referees called the game after the long delay. Jamal Brown stated “this victory should moves us up in the rankings after beating previously No. 1 Young at Chicago State, and now Crane.
