This is the place where you get the lowdown on the haps in Chicago high school basketball, plus the new Windy City Top 20 as ranked by ISNet high school basketball analyst Roy Blackman. Updates are every Monday throughout the season, so don't miss a week!!!

The IHSA AA Super-Sectionals:
Double the Fun at the United Center

For the first time in history, there were two super-sectionals under one roof. The United Center, home to three Chicago Public League title games, was Basketball Central on March 12, 2002, as the first IHSA Super-Sectional doubleheader took place.

Game 1 featured #3 (Maywood) Proviso East - the state's preseason #1 - against #6 (Winnetka) New Trier. This was supposed to be All-American Dee Brown’s coming out party, playing in the house that Michael Jordan built. New Trier on the other hand had a different idea. The fans at the United Center wound up watching New Trier put on what was arguably the best performance that a coach can ask for in his players. On paper New Trier looked like it was going to be heading home and the Pirates going Downstate Tuesday night- but again, that was on paper. The Trevians showed that they are no fluke and can play with any team in the state of Illinois. New Trier played a near perfect game against Proviso East in the first game and came away with a 60 – 51 victory before a crowd of 13,544 at the United Center. New Trier (24 – 6) advances to the state quarterfinals Friday to face Highland Park after snapping Proviso East's 18-game winning streak. Ted Rosinski led the Trevians with 17 points. Shannon Brown scored 18 points in a losing effort for Proviso East who finished the season at (26 – 3).

Game 2 was what March Madness is all about. #2 (South Holland) Thornwood, last year's state runner-up, took on the quiet #1 Joliet Steelmen. In a game that featured several lead changes and great plays down the stretch, it was fitting that the winning basket would come from a man who was overshadowed last season by current Bull Eddy Curry. Melvin Buckley scored 12 points and tips in the game-winning basket with 18 seconds to play as the Thunderbirds topped Joliet 46-45. Thornwood (27 – 4), which will make its second consecutive trip Downstate after coming up short in the championship game last year, advances to the Class AA quarterfinals and plays state second-ranked Springfield-Lanphier in the 6:45p.m. quarterfinal Friday at Carver Arena in Peoria. Thornwood . Brandon Dillard led Joliet with 13 points which finished the season (29 – 2).

ANSWERING THE CALL: the 2002 Chicago Public League Basketball Championship

What does it take for a player to come through in a championship game in front of 15,000 fans at the United Center? Just ask Darius Glover. Coach Chris Head said he needed someone to become the leader of the team after a semifinal victory over Von Steuben and who better to respond to a coach's call then a senior. Darius Glover a 6-4 senior center 'the quiet giant' remembers what is was like to lose a championship game he experienced it as a freshman when Westinghouse lost to King in 1999, but Mr. Glover was not going to have any of that this time around and came through in a big way on Sunday, March 10, in a 62-58 victory over Red-West rival Farragut (22-10). Elliot Poole led Farragut with 26 points and 9 rebounds in a losing effort. Glover finished with 26 points and 12 rebounds, 21 of his 26 points came in the first and fourth quarter. With the victory Westinghouse (27-5) advances to the Elite Eight for the second time in three years. Westinghouse is looking to better on a second place finish in 2000 when they lost to eventual state champion West Aurora. Westinghouse will play in the Class AA quarterfinals Friday in Peoria and will face the winner of the DeKalb super sectional, either No. 2 West Aurora (27-2) or Glenbard North (22-7). Westinghouse won its seventh city title and its fifth since 1992. Jamal Brown contributed 11 points and 3 steals for the Warriors.
